A 50-year-old woman, who had been undergoing allergy treatment for a long time due to a complaint of continuous fluid coming from her nose, learned through examinations conducted during dental treatment that the fluid flowing from her nose was actually cerebrospinal fluid. The woman immediately went to the hospital and quickly regained her health after undergoing surgery performed endoscopically.

50-year-old Özlem Akçay, who lives in the Özdere neighborhood of the Menderes district in İzmir, had been experiencing nasal discharge complaints for a long time.

THOUGHT IT WAS ALLERGY FOR YEARS, DISCOVERED THE TRUTH AT THE DENTIST

Living in an area surrounded by nature, Akçay attributed her complaints to allergies, but over time she realized that this situation indicated something much more serious than a simple allergic condition. After a brain tomography taken during dental treatment revealed that the fluid flowing from her nose was actually cerebrospinal fluid, Akçay immediately went to the hospital.

REGAINED HER HEALTH

Examinations showed that brain tissue had sagged into the (sphenoid) sinus located at the back of the nose, and cerebrospinal fluid was leaking from there. This indicated a condition known medically as 'spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak,' which can lead to serious infections if neglected. After the surgery performed endoscopically, the patient's nasal discharge completely stopped, and she regained her health in a short time.

"A CONDITION REQUIRING URGENT INTERVENTION"

Prof. Dr. Erdem Eren, an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist who treated the patient, evaluated the process with the following words: "Ms. Özlem came to us with a complaint of long-term nasal discharge. Examinations showed that brain tissue had sagged into the (sphenoid) sinus located at the back of the nose, and cerebrospinal fluid was leaking from there. This condition is one that requires urgent intervention as it can lead to serious complications such as meningitis."

"I THOUGHT IT WOULD PASS WITH ALLERGY MEDICATIONS"

Sharing her feelings after the surgery, Özlem Akçay said, "At first, I thought it was an allergy because many people around me had runny noses. I thought it would pass with allergy medications. However, when it didn't go away for a long time, I consulted a doctor. It turned out that the fluid flowing from my nose was cerebrospinal fluid. I underwent a very successful operation. Now I feel very good."
