In Adana, a demolition decision has been made for the illegal structures on Menderes Island, known as 'American Island', located on the Seyhan Dam Lake, one of the city's attractions.
The Seyhan Dam Lake, located along Adnan Menderes Boulevard in the Çukurova district, has seen dozens of illegal structures built on Menderes Island over the years. The illegal businesses, which generally sell the local delicacy bici bici and salep, have wooden extensions and seating areas that spread out to the lake. At various times, the municipality attempted to demolish these establishments, but this did not happen due to some individuals resisting with firearms and holding protests.
DRUG INCIDENTS SPARKED REACTIONS
Over the years, the boulevards surrounding the lake have been renovated, new roads have been opened, and luxury buildings have been constructed, but the ugly appearance on the island has remained the same. Drug-related and security incidents on the island have also caused reactions. The insistence of unlicensed business owners in the high real estate value area to invite those entering the island to their establishments through aggressive sales tactics has increased complaints.
4 DAYS GIVEN
With the initiatives of the Adana Governorship, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change took action and this time made a definitive demolition decision. Business owners, exceeding 50 in number, were given until December 23 to vacate the island. It was communicated to the tradesmen that if the island was not vacated, demolition would be carried out under the supervision of law enforcement. The decision was welcomed with joy by the local community.
"A RECREATIONAL AREA SHOULD BE CREATED"
Şahin Ulupınar, who wants to eliminate the visual pollution in the area, stated that the area should be cleaned of pollution and turned into a recreational or picnic area. Ulupınar said, "There is a serious visual and environmental pollution here. The area is filled with bici bici and salep stalls set up all the way to the water. This situation pollutes the environment and spoils the appearance of the region. We want these places to be cleaned of pollution and made more orderly and aesthetic. Additionally, it has been observed that some bici bici shop owners are occupying areas that citizens should use by redirecting drinking water lines to their businesses," he said.
"WE DON'T ENCOUNTER PLEASANT SCENES WHEN WE ARRIVE"
Samet Durmuş, who stated that he regularly visits the island, said that the demolition decision is correct. Durmuş said, "There is both environmental pollution and visual pollution here. When I come with my family and friends, we do not encounter pleasant scenes. I want these places to be more orderly and tidy. I feel sorry for our tradesmen, but I think it would be more appropriate for the overall appearance of Adana to have arrangements like sports and running areas," he said.
