On the first day of the new year, snowfall was effective in Istanbul. While 13 districts were covered in white during the daytime, the Meteorology and AKOM announced that no snow was expected in the evening, but caution was advised against hidden icing. Schools were closed for tomorrow in 54 cities due to snowfall, while no holiday decision has yet been made in Istanbul.
Turkey entered the new year with snowfall. After consecutive warnings from the Meteorology and AKOM, many parts of the country were covered in snow. The snowfall particularly brought life to a standstill in eastern cities. While many cities suspended education for Friday, all eyes turned to Istanbul.
WARNING OF ICING AND FROST UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING IN ISTANBUL
According to a statement from AKOM, it is predicted that the snowfall will be intermittently strong in the European side of Istanbul, especially around the Bosphorus and generally on the Anatolian side from the afternoon, with air temperatures expected to range between -1 and 3 degrees. It is anticipated that the snowfall will lose its effect after 6:00 PM, but icing and frost events may still be effective until tomorrow morning.
In Istanbul, it is predicted that the temperature will be partly cloudy with a low of 1 and a high of 8 degrees tomorrow. It is reported that there will be no precipitation and the air temperature will range between 7-16 degrees over the weekend, with a southwesterly storm expected, and partly cloudy weather on Monday. Rain is expected on Tuesday, and heavy downpours on Wednesday.
BE AWARE OF THESE DISTRICTS IN THE MEGACITY
According to expert evaluations, it is expected that the precipitation masses coming from the Black Sea will be effective in the northern and eastern lines of Istanbul between 1:00 PM and 4:45 PM. The Istanbul Governorship stated that snowfall could be seen in the city from the evening hours, warning to be cautious against disruptions in transportation, icing, and frost events.
Among the districts highlighted in the warnings are Beykoz, Sarıyer, Şile, Ümraniye, Çekmeköy, Üsküdar, Beşiktaş, Ataşehir, Sancaktepe, Sultanbeyli, Eyüpsultan, Şişli, and the surroundings of Kağıthane. It was noted that especially in areas close to the Black Sea, snow could suddenly intensify, and due to temperature differences within the city, precipitation could be felt more intensely in some spots.
After the warnings, many districts of the megacity were covered in snowfall.
The Istanbul Governorship's statement included the following remarks:
"It is expected that the snowfall will increase in intensity towards the early morning and will be intermittently strong until noon. The snowfall is predicted to be particularly effective in the high and northern parts of Şile, Beykoz, Ümraniye, Çekmeköy, Sultanbeyli, Sancaktepe, Pendik districts, the north of Sarıyer, and around Arnavutköy, creating a cover on the ground. Caution and preparedness should be exercised against possible disruptions in transportation, icing, and frost events."
WILL SCHOOLS BE CLOSED IN ISTANBUL?
As the snowfall continues, the question of whether schools in Istanbul will be closed on Friday, January 2, has become a matter of curiosity. No official statement has yet come from the Istanbul Governorship regarding the issue.
