The Istanbul Governorship and AKOM have published the new year weather forecast report for the megacity. In the city, which is under the influence of cold air waves coming from Iceland, temperatures are expected to drop below zero. While AKOM warns Istanbul residents about the risk of mixed rain, occasional snowfall, and hidden icing after midnight, the Istanbul Governorship anticipates that the precipitation will be particularly effective in the districts on the Asian side and around Sarıyer and Arnavutköy.
“Will it snow in Istanbul on New Year's?” question has found an answer. The Istanbul Governorship and AKOM issued consecutive warnings, announcing that snowfall is expected in the evening hours.
THE TEMPERATURE WILL DROP TO 1 DEGREE AT MIDNIGHT, SNOW WILL BEGIN
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Affairs Directorate (AKOM) published the New Year weather forecast report for Istanbul. The city, under the influence of cold air waves coming from Iceland, will see temperatures drop below zero. AKOM warned Istanbul residents about the risk of mixed rain, occasional snowfall, and hidden icing.
According to AKOM's weather forecast report, as of Wednesday, December 31, strong winds blowing from the north (30-60 km/h) have affected the city. Meteorological data indicates that the temperature, expected to rise to around 6°C during the day, will rapidly drop in the evening hours, falling to 1°C by midnight. Mixed rain and snowfall are predicted, especially in the northern and northwestern regions.
BE CAREFUL OF HIDDEN ICING
The AKOM report emphasized that mixed rain and occasional snowfall will be seen in the northern and western regions, especially from the evening hours. Drivers were warned particularly about hidden icing. The cold air flow is expected to continue its effect in the coming days.
According to forecasts, the temperature situation for the next 5 days will be as follows:
- January 1, Thursday: Lowest -1°C, highest 3°C (Rainy)
- January 2, Friday: Lowest 1°C, highest 8°C
- January 3, Saturday: Although the temperature may rise to 14°C, strong winds will be effective.
- January 4-5: Temperatures will hover around 10-16°C.
AKOM officials stated that air temperatures in Istanbul will remain 3 to 6 degrees below seasonal norms until January 14 (excluding January 3-6) and called on citizens to be cautious.
A WARNING ALSO CAME FROM THE GOVERNORATE
The Istanbul Governorship issued a warning regarding the snowfall expected to start in the evening hours and continue until noon tomorrow. According to the governorship's statement, the precipitation is expected to be particularly effective in the high and northern parts of Şile, Beykoz, Ümraniye, Çekmeköy, Sultanbeyli, Sancaktepe, Pendik districts, the north of Sarıyer, and around Arnavutköy, creating a cover on the ground.
The governorship's statement is as follows:
“Be careful of the snowfall that may occur after the evening hours in Istanbul! According to the evaluations of the General Directorate of Meteorology; it is predicted that the cold and rainy weather affecting Istanbul will pause until the evening hours today; however, it is expected to start again in the form of snowfall after the evening hours. The snowfall is expected to increase in intensity towards the morning and be strongly effective until noon. The snowfall is particularly expected to be effective in the high and northern parts of Şile, Beykoz, Ümraniye, Çekmeköy, Sultanbeyli, Sancaktepe, Pendik districts, the north of Sarıyer, and around Arnavutköy, creating a cover on the ground. Caution and preparedness should be exercised against possible disruptions in transportation, icing, and freezing events.”
