The Palma City Council in Spain has accepted a proposal from the far-right Vox party to declare Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as an 'unwelcome person.' The proposal supported by Vox included demands for Sanchez's resignation and early elections.

In Palma, in the Balearic Islands group in eastern Spain, the City Council accepted a proposal initiated by the far-right Vox party to declare Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez an "unwelcome person."

PRIME MINISTER DECLARED UNWELCOME IN SPAIN

The proposal presented by the Vox party, which included anti-Sanchez statements, was accepted with the support of the right-wing People's Party. The proposal, which indicated that Sanchez, who is also the leader of the left-wing Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), was shown as an "unwelcome person" in Palma, called for the Prime Minister to resign and for early general elections to be held.

"IT'S TIME TO REMOVE HIM FROM GOVERNMENT"

Speaking during the discussion of the proposal, Vox party spokesperson Fulgencia Coll stated, "It is time to remove this character, who is mired in corruption, a 21st-century autocrat. This character, who bows to separatist partners in order to stay one more day in Moncloa (the Prime Minister's residence), must be removed from the government."

Francisco Ducros, speaking on behalf of PSOE, argued that this proposal was "inappropriate and illegal," accusing the People's Party, the main opposition in Spain, of adopting the rhetoric of the far-right in supporting the proposal.

A similar anti-Sanchez proposal accepted in the Palma City Council was also initiated by the far-right Vox in the Albacete City Council last month. Proposals to declare a sitting Prime Minister "unwelcome" have been accepted in three municipalities in Spain.

The first of these proposals was made in 2016 in the Pontevedra City Council in the Autonomous Community of Galicia in the north of the country, due to a decision related to a paper factory in the region, against the then Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy from the People's Party. Sanchez, who has been Prime Minister for three terms since 2018, is currently governing the country with a minority coalition government he formed in November 2023 after the last general elections.
