The European Union fined Google 2.95 billion euros for violating competition rules in its digital advertising activities. The investigation concluded that Google favored its own services over those of its competitors.

The European Union (EU) imposed a fine of 2.95 billion euros on the technology company Google for violating competition rules in its digital advertising activities.

The EU Commission announced that the investigation into the US company Google, which was conducted for violating EU competition rules in the advertising technology sector (adtech), has been completed.

GOOGLE'S HUGE FINE

The statement indicated that it was determined that Google violated the rules by providing preferential treatment to its own online advertising technology services over its competitors, and therefore, a fine of 2.95 billion euros was imposed on the company.

It was also stated in the announcement that the EU Commission sent an order to Google to end its preferential practices in its favor and to eliminate conflicts of interest in the advertising technology supply chain, indicating that the company must formally notify the EU of the steps it will take in this regard within 60 days.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The EU, which initiated the competition investigation against Google due to advertisements in 2021, accused the company of violating competition rules in digital advertising activities in 2023.

The EU claimed that Google has abused its position to favor its own services in advertising markets and selection since 2014, allowing the company to charge higher fees for the services it offers, stating that these behaviors constitute a violation of EU rules prohibiting the abuse of a dominant position in the market.
