A group protesting the conference at Boğaziçi University, where Nurettin Yıldız was a speaker, attacked the police; 97 people were detained. Murat Ağırel, who claimed that the police assaulted the youths, received a response from Governor Davut Gül. Gül stated, "It didn't happen exactly like that," and explained that 13 police officers were injured after falling into a construction pit due to the protesters' attack.
The "Islamic Sciences: For Whom, How Much?" conference organized by the Bosphorus University Islamic Studies Club (BİSAK) featured Nurettin Yıldız as a speaker.
THEY TRIED TO BLOCK IT
Before the conference, a protest march was organized against Yıldız, while police teams took security measures on campus. Around 20:45, a group gathered at the Bosphorus University North Campus, attempting to obstruct the activities of the student club. Police teams warned the group to disperse.
97 PEOPLE DETAINED
The group, which did not heed the warnings, attacked the Riot Police Department teams. Thirteen police officers were lightly injured in the attack. During the events, a total of 97 demonstrators, including 39 women, were detained. It was learned that the detained individuals were still undergoing processing at the police station.
ALLEGATIONS OF REVERSE HANDCUFFING AND ASSAULT
However, journalist Murat Ağırel raised some allegations on his social media account, stating, "The police intervened, and students were detained with reverse handcuffs. Journalist Can Öztürk was also assaulted and detained. According to the governor's statement, 97 students were detained."
GOVERNOR GÜL'S SWIFT RESPONSE
Following the rapid spread of this allegation on social media, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül made a post stating, "It didn't happen exactly like that," responding to Ağırel's claims. In his post, Governor Gül stated, "Today at Bosphorus University, a group of protesters attempting to obstruct Nurettin Yıldız's conference tried to breach the security arrangement of the riot police. As a result of the physical intervention of the protesters, 13 of our police officers fell into a construction pit approximately 5 meters deep and were injured. A total of 97 people were detained in connection with the incident."
EGG ATTACK
Meanwhile, the speaker invited to the event, author Nurettin Yıldız, was attacked with eggs. While Yıldız was speaking in the hall where the event was held, he faced a student's reaction. At that moment, an egg, whose origin was unclear, was thrown towards the podium where Yıldız was sitting. Following the ensuing scuffle, the protester was removed from the hall. The moments when the egg was thrown at Yıldız and the events that followed were captured on camera.
