The Ukrainian parliament has approved a bill extending President Zelensky's powers until the newly elected president takes office. The bill was supported by 268 members of parliament.

The Ukrainian parliament has adopted a draft decision to extend the term of President Volodymyr Zelensky's powers "until the newly elected president of Ukraine takes office."

Yaroslav Jelezniyak, a member of the Voice Party in Ukraine, stated on his Telegram account that a draft decision supporting the extension of President Zelensky's powers until the elections was voted on in parliament.

268 MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT VOTED YES

Jelezniyak reported that 268 members of parliament voted 'yes' for the draft titled "Supporting Democracy in Ukraine in the Context of Russia's Aggression."

The draft decision presented to the parliament emphasized the necessity of adhering to the principle of institutional power continuity as stipulated in Ukrainian laws, especially under martial law, and stated that President Volodymyr Zelensky should exercise his powers until the newly elected president takes office, in accordance with the first part of Article 108 of the Ukrainian Constitution.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The draft decision to extend Zelensky's powers "until the newly elected president of Ukraine takes office" had failed to pass the first vote held yesterday.

Zelensky has been serving as the President of Ukraine since 2019. He argues that holding a presidential election is impossible due to the ongoing war in his country, and therefore states that the elections will not take place in 2024.
