The mysterious underground mosque, accidentally discovered by villagers in the Gömük plateau of the Karameşe village in Batman's Sason district, has started to attract great interest following media coverage. Visitors wanting to see the historical structure are flocking to the area from Batman and surrounding provinces.
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS MAY BELONG TO AN UNKNOWN HISTORY
The architectural details inside the underground structure entered through a small hole noticed by a group of citizens wandering in nature suggest that the structure may belong to an unknown history. Inside the structure, there is a mihrab, numerous jars embedded in the walls believed to be used for sound insulation, and a large grave whose identity has yet to be determined.
EVERYONE STARTED TO FLOOD IN
After the news, Ramazan Gümüş, one of the citizens who came to the area with a group of 40 people to see the underground mosque that piqued the interest of curious visitors, said, "This place was just discovered. We came because we were very curious. It is truly a mysterious place. It has an important historical texture that everyone should come and see."
"THE ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE SPARKS GREAT CURIOSITY"
Sabahattin Atalay, who noticed the structure while wandering in the area before, stated, "It is said by some that this underground structure we stumbled upon is a tomb, while others say it is a historical mosque. Its architectural structure sparks great curiosity, and for this reason, it is visited in large groups."
"EVERYONE WAS AMAZED BUT IT NEEDS MAINTENANCE"
Ramazan Doğan, who guided visitors from Batman, pointed out that the structure is in a neglected state, saying, "We came to see this mosque we saw in the news with about 40 friends. Everyone was amazed, but the structure seriously needs maintenance. There are leaks during rains, and floodwaters have damaged the walls. It saddened us that it has been left unattended. The presence of a mihrab and a pulpit inside the structure, along with the clear direction of the qibla, indicates that this is a mosque. It carries completely classical Islamic architectural features. We want it to be restored and brought into tourism."
Citizens visiting the underground mosque expressed their astonishment, stating that the structure's architecture and different features set it apart from the buildings they had encountered before.
