However, on February 24, 2010, after a routine show, a horrific event occurred when Dawn approached the pool's edge. Tilikum suddenly grabbed her by her ponytail and pulled her into the water. The violent attack, which took place in front of the audience, lasted for 45 minutes. Despite all rescue efforts, Dawn lost her life.
The true tragedy of this incident lay in Tilikum's past. Captured from the wild at the age of two in Iceland in 1983, he had been condemned to captivity. He had previously been involved in two other fatalities. Experts believe that this intelligent creature, taken from its natural habitat and kept in small pools, suffers from psychological issues.
The incident became the subject of the documentary "Blackfish," raising questions about the use of marine mammals for entertainment purposes. After Dawn's death, trainers at SeaWorld were no longer allowed to enter the same water as orcas and were required to stay at least 45 cm away.
