After a series of aftershocks in Istanbul during the evening hours, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated, "If the aftershocks that occur from now on continue to align along the Istanbul fault, it means we are facing a situation that should be taken very seriously. I will monitor the developments without sleeping."

As the public panicked and took to the streets after the aftershocks, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan issued a frightening warning.
In a statement on his social media account, Ercan said, "As the 6.2 magnitude earthquake on the Thrace branch transfers its tension eastward with aftershocks, unexpectedly, it jumped to the solid Istanbul branch in the east. The small earthquake of M4.6 that occurred at 20:05 coincided exactly with the focus of the earthquake I expected to be M6.7 right in front of Küçükçekmece."
"WE MAY BE FACING A VERY ALARMING SITUATION"
Ercan continued in his post, "If the aftershocks that will occur from now on continue to align on the Istanbul branch, it means we are facing a very alarming situation. I will be on alert and monitor developments without sleeping. If it doesn't continue, our concern will end," he stated.
"I AM MONITORING DEVELOPMENTS WITH CONCERN"
Minutes after his post, Ercan made another statement. Saying "There are strange developments in the North Marmara Thrace branch," Ercan noted, "Despite the destructive pressure pushing from the east, the transfer of tension in the Thrace branch has started to split into two branches towards the east, seen in two separate faults shaped like a Y-fork. The aftershocks are stopping in the Büyükçekmece-Çatalca fault, except for two. The faults are still active with small earthquakes. I am monitoring developments with concern," he wrote.
