On a quiet street in the Queens area of New York, a plumber's vehicle exploded. According to fire officials, the explosion caused damage to several homes and vehicles.
At around 6:45 AM on Friday, a parked Infiniti QX56 was seen exploding in bright orange flames on 133rd Street in South Ozone Park. Shocked neighborhood residents watched the series of explosions, initially thinking there were fireworks in the vehicle.
Fire Chief George Healy explained that the explosion was actually caused by pressurized gas cylinders in the work vehicle. The lithium-ion batteries in the vehicle were also safely neutralized by the hazardous materials team.
In addition to the completely burned vehicle, at least six homes had their windows shattered, and five nearby parked vehicles were damaged. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The vehicle's owner, Dinell Harricharan, was at his home in Long Island during the explosion. Harricharan, who said he parked his work vehicle in front of his brother's house the night before, stated, "This vehicle was our livelihood. Now we have to start all over again." Harricharan also learned that the insurance company would not cover the damages, and an investigation regarding his vehicle is being conducted by the Fire and Police Departments.
