Recent suspicious deaths in Russia have drawn attention. Two incidents have stood out in the country's agenda: a wealthy pro-Putin politician found hanging from a tree with his hands bound, and a former transportation executive found dead in a luxury hotel in Moscow.
Vitaly Kapustin, 43, was a construction company owner and a regional deputy. The police were alerted when Kapustin was found hanging from a tall tree by the roadside, with his hands tied behind his back. Eyewitnesses expressed skepticism about the possibility of suicide, stating, "He was so high up that a person couldn't easily get there. We saw that his hands were tied." Kapustin was a member of the pro-Putin United Russia Party. An investigation into his death is ongoing.
This incident marked the third suspicious death of the week. A day earlier, former transportation executive Alexander Fedotov was found dead outside a luxury hotel at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow. It was reported that Fedotov had been staying in a high-floor room and died in the hotel room. No suicide note was found regarding his death. Fedotov had abruptly left his position as the transportation director in St. Petersburg last year. This resignation had come to light amid allegations that Russia's powerful intelligence agency, the FSB, was conducting an investigation.
Fedotov was alleged to have connections with Roman Starovoit, the transportation minister who was dismissed in July. Starovoit's death is also still considered suspicious by many. Some claims suggest that Fedotov was killed after being tortured. Additionally, another official connected to both individuals has reportedly gone missing.
Fedotov's death had come to public attention a day earlier with the death of a former customs director named Boris Avakyan. Avakyan was found dead with his wrists cut in the Armenian Consulate in St. Petersburg. The circumstances of Avakyan's death, whether it was suicide or murder, remain controversial.
Last week, Alexander Tyunin, a senior executive of a major military-related factory, was found dead from a gunshot wound. Experts suggest that these and similar deaths may be linked to disputes in the business world and political pressures.
In Russia, especially recently, the suspicious deaths of high-level company executives and politicians raise serious questions in both national and international public opinion.
