Canada Cancel Football Friendly With Iran

Match was scheduled to be played on June 5 in Vancouver.

A friendly match between Canada and Iran in June was canceled by the Canadian football body on Thursday.

"Canada Soccer has cancelled the international match that was scheduled for 5 June 2022 against Iran as part of the Men's National Team preparations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022," the Canadian football association said on Twitter.


Canada Soccer did not give any reason for the cancelation.

"Additional details will be provided to all ticket purchasers," it added.

The game was scheduled to be held at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium.

Canada and Iran are among the 32 participating teams at the 2022 World Cup, but they are in different groups.

In May, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that "it wasn't a very good idea to invite the Iranian soccer team here to Canada".

"But that's something that the organizers are going to have to explain," Trudeau added.

Canada will face Curacao on June 9 in Vancouver, and then it will visit Honduras on June 13.

On Jan. 8, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 from Tehran to Kyiv was shot down by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

All 176 people on board were killed in the crash, including Iranians, Canadians, Ukrainians, Swedes, Afghans, Germans, and British citizens.

Iran's General Staff of the Armed Forces said that as a result of a "human error", the plane was accidentally shot down by the air defense system while it was passing over a "sensitive military point." -
