In the Gebze district of Kocaeli, another building located about 100 meters away from the structure that collapsed and became a grave for four people experienced cracking in one of its columns. Hearing the cracking sounds, the residents of the building panicked and rushed outside, while teams took extensive security measures in the area. Kocaeli Governor İlhami Aktaş, who arrived at the scene, stated that 21 apartments in three buildings, including the one in question, had been evacuated.

Cracks have formed in a 6-story building located 100 meters away from the 7-story building that collapsed in the Gebze district of Kocaeli, where 4 people from the same family lost their lives.

PEOPLE RAN OUT IN PANIC AFTER HEARING CRACKING SOUNDS

Residents of the building from which the cracking sounds were coming rushed outside in panic, while police teams took security measures in the area. The vicinity of the building was closed off with a security cordon.

AFAD teams were dispatched to the area. A total of 21 apartments in the building in question and the two adjacent apartment buildings were evacuated.

GOVERNOR AKTAŞ: CRACKING IN ONE COLUMN IS OBSERVED

Kocaeli Governor İlhami Aktaş, who arrived at the scene, announced that the evacuation of the building had been completed and that work was ongoing. Aktaş stated: "We received a report to our 112 emergency line. Our Metropolitan Municipality, Gebze Municipality, AFAD team, district governor, police chief, and our technical colleagues have arrived in the area. As a precaution, we ensured the evacuation of the building until the technical examination is completed. A total of 21 apartments were evacuated. Teams from our Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, AFAD, and teams formed from the university are continuing investigations in the area. After the cause is determined, work will be carried out. Our citizens will be hosted in our metropolitan municipality. The hosting will continue until the situation is clarified. 12 buildings had been sealed. Some of those citizens are staying in metropolitan facilities, while some are with their relatives. Ground measurements will be conducted. Investigations will be carried out in the most meticulous way in a coordinated manner. The safety of our people is at stake. Decisions regarding the status of the buildings will be made based on the results of the investigations. The evacuation process will be reviewed again. There is a crack in one column of the existing building. Our colleagues are looking into it. Teams from Ankara and Istanbul are coming. Both our Interior Minister and our Minister of Environment and Urbanization are concerned about the issue. Work will continue to be increased. There have been no other reports, and our colleagues are observing quickly. There have been no findings in the technical examinations that have been ongoing for 2 days, either visually or reported. The other 14 buildings were also identified and evacuated in that manner. All precautions taken are to ensure the safety of our citizens' lives and property. As a state, we are here with all our resources. Our President has been following the situation from the very beginning. We have received his instructions."

12 BUILDINGS HAD BEEN SEALED

Meanwhile, 12 buildings surrounding the collapsed 7-story building were sealed in the morning hours, and 45 families were evacuated. Citizens who had to evacuate their homes took their essential belongings under the supervision of the teams and left the area.

EXPERT COMMITTEE HAD STARTED INVESTIGATIONS

After the collapse, an expert committee consisting of construction and geophysical engineers and architects began investigations in the area where the debris was located. In the debris area and its surroundings, a solidness test was conducted by striking the ground hard with a hammer and performing seismic measurements of the underground with a deflectometer.
