The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that cases of the M monkeypox virus (mpox), clade 1b variant, have been confirmed in individuals without recent travel history in Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the USA.

"IT HAS CROSSED THE CONTINENT, MUST BE CONTROLLED RAPIDLY"

In its latest report, the WHO warned that the circulation of all subtypes of the M monkeypox virus continues, expressing concern that if the outbreak is not rapidly controlled, the spread of the virus will continue. The report also indicated that the clade 1b variant has spread beyond Africa.

OBSERVED IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

It was stated that Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the USA have confirmed cases of the clade 1b variant of the M monkeypox virus in individuals without recent travel connections.

According to the WHO's latest report, 42 countries reported a total of 3,135 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 12 deaths by September 2025. More than 80% of the cases were recorded in the African region.

The report indicated that 2,862 cases were confirmed in 17 African countries where transmission has continued in the last 6 weeks, and 17 people have died.

THERE ARE TWO GENETIC TYPES OF MONKEYPOX

The monkeypox virus has two genetic types known as "clade I and clade II." "Clade I" is the Mpox type that generally causes more severe diseases and death, typically seen in Central and East Africa. "Clade II," which is specific to West Africa and causes milder monkeypox, was responsible for the outbreak in 2022.

The "clade 1b" observed in the current outbreak is reported to be a new and more severe strain of the virus. Clade 1b is more commonly seen in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries. Central African countries report both clade 1a and 1b, while East African countries report clade 1b cases.
