After the European Court of Human Rights' ruling on the human rights violations concerning former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, all eyes are on the court's decision. Following the positive statements from Devlet Bahçeli and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, DEM Party Diyarbakır MP Cengiz Çandar stated that the release is a matter of time.

After the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued a ruling on a violation of rights concerning former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, attention turned to domestic law. Following the positive statements from Bahçeli and President Erdoğan, eyes are now on Demirtaş's release.

"HE COULD BE RELEASED WITHIN HOURS"

Speaking on the subject, which has also received positive messages from the opposition front, DEM Party Diyarbakır Deputy Cengiz Çandar stated that Demirtaş's release is a matter of time. Çandar said, "I was in Ankara last night. My impression, my perception - which I do not believe is unique to me - is that this release will happen within a few days. We may need to expect Demirtaş's release in the coming days, perhaps even within hours. It is beneficial to be optimistic about this matter."

BAHÇELİ: THERE IS BENEFIT IN HIS RELEASE

The first positive reaction to the ECHR ruling regarding Demirtaş came from MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli. Speaking after a group meeting, Bahçeli stated, "Legal avenues have reached a conclusion. Demirtaş's release will be beneficial for Turkey."

PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN: "WE WILL FOLLOW WHAT THE JUDICIARY SAYS"

In response to a question on the matter, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, "This country is a country of law. We will follow what the judiciary says on this issue."

HE RECEIVED 42 YEARS IN THE KOBANI CASE

Former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş was arrested in 2016 as part of an investigation into the Kobani events. As a result of the trial process, a total of 42 years of prison sentences were handed down to Demirtaş in 2024.

ECHR HAD ISSUED A VIOLATION RULING

Due to prolonged detention, Demirtaş had applied to the European Court of Human Rights. The court had issued violation rulings regarding Demirtaş's detention three times. Turkey had last appealed for the case to be reviewed by the ECHR Grand Chamber on October 8. When the ECHR rejected the appeal, the violation ruling concerning Demirtaş became final.

HIS LAWYERS FILED FOR RELEASE

Following this ruling from the ECHR, Demirtaş's lawyers filed a request for his release. After the ECHR decision is received, the Ankara Regional Court of Appeals 22nd Criminal Chamber will make a decision regarding the release request.
