The FBI is at the Washington, DC home of a Russian oligarch who is a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, the FBI confirmed Tuesday.
A bureau spokesperson said the agency is conducting "court-authorized law enforcement activity" at the home of Oleg Deripaska in Washington's Kalorama neighborhood.
The home has been closed off by police and an FBI agent has been posted at the driveway, according to multiple images posted to social media.
Deripaska, a billionaire oil tycoon, was placed under US sanctions in 2018 for having acted on behalf of Russia and working in that country's energy sector. He had been previously investigated for money laundering and was accused of threatening the lives of business rivals and engaging in extortion and money laundering, the Treasury Department said at the time.
A US judge dismissed in June a lawsuit from Deripaska seeking to have the sanctions lifted. -
