Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton are reported to be giving testimony as part of a congressional investigation into billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in prison while being prosecuted for allegedly running a sex trafficking ring involving underage girls. The Clinton couple had previously stated that they would not comply with the subpoena sent to them and would not appear to give testimony, and they had been found guilty of "contempt of Congress."
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton's spokesperson Angel Urena made a statement regarding the committee's post on the U.S.-based X company's social media platform. Urena stated that Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton "negotiated in good faith" and that the couple would testify in the congressional investigation related to Epstein.
"THEY TOLD YOU BUT YOU DIDN'T CARE"
Urena said, "They told you what they knew under oath, but you didn't care. However, former President (Bill Clinton) and former Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton) will be there. They are eagerly awaiting to set a precedent that will apply to everyone."
"DISOBEDIENCE TO CONGRESS"
Republican James Comer, the Chairman of the Oversight Committee, argued that the only reason the Clintons agreed to testify was the allegations of "disobedience to Congress" against them, stating that no definitive agreement had been reached yet.
Comer noted that they did not have a written document, expressing that they were open to the proposal but that it depended on "what they say." No information has yet been shared regarding when the couple will testify.
THEY HAD SAID THEY WOULD NOT TESTIFY
Bill and Hillary Clinton announced on January 13 that they would not comply with the subpoena sent to them in the congressional investigation regarding the Epstein case and would not go to testify. Chairman Comer also stated that he would file a lawsuit against the Clinton couple for "disobedience to Congress" despite their failure to appear for testimony.
FOUND GUILTY
In a vote regarding the prosecution of the Clintons for "contempt of court" after they refused to testify in the investigation, former U.S. President Bill Clinton was found guilty of "contempt of court" with 34 votes against 8, while his wife and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was found guilty with 28 votes against 15.
Comer later rejected a proposal made by the couple's attorney for Bill Clinton to participate in a written interview and for Hillary Clinton to submit a sworn statement, stating that both should testify under oath before the committee.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Epstein, who was charged with sexually abusing dozens of girls under the age of 18, including the youngest being 14, and establishing a prostitution network, was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, New York, on August 10, 2019.
The disclosed Epstein case files included famous names such as former Prince Andrew, U.S. President Donald Trump, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, actor Kevin Spacey, singer Michael Jackson, illusionist David Copperfield, lawyer Alan Dershowitz, and former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.
The FBI also stated that, as a result of its investigation with the U.S. Department of Justice, there was no evidence of a "client list" involving famous individuals, and it was concluded that Epstein, who was alleged to have been murdered to cover up the crimes of individuals including government officials, celebrities, and businessmen, actually committed suicide in his cell.
