The Republican People's Party (CHP) announced that it would not send a member to the delegation following the decision of the Terror-Free Turkey Commission to visit İmralı and left the meeting. While the decision sparked discussions within the party, Abdulvehap Akan, the Chairman of the Nusaybin District Election Board and the Human Rights Commission, resigned from his positions with a video he published. Akan argued that the CHP was not positioned correctly on the Kurdish issue, stating, "If they do not love the Kurdish people, they should not love us either."
In the 18th meeting of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's Commission for a Terror-Free Turkey, a decision was made to send a delegation to İmralı. The decision, accepted with the "Yes" votes of 32 members of parliament, was opposed by the CHP.
"OUR PARTY WILL BRING PEACE TO THIS COUNTRY"
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir stated during the meeting that they do not find it appropriate to go to İmralı and announced that they would not provide a member for the delegation. Emir said in his statement, "We do not find it right for a meeting discussing a visit to İmralı to be held in secrecy from our nation. Our party will bring peace to this country." Following the statement, 11 CHP members left the meeting room. Despite this, Emir said they would continue the commission's work.
REACTION AND RESIGNATION FROM WITHIN THE PARTY
There were both support and criticism from within the party regarding the CHP's decision on İmralı. One of the names expressing reaction was Abdulvehap Akan, the Chairman of the CHP Nusaybin District Election Board and Human Rights Commission.
"WHEN IT COMES TO THE KURDISH ISSUE, CHP IS VERY DIFFERENT"
Akan announced his resignation from the CHP, his position in the district election board, and his roles in the Human Rights Commission through a video he shared on social media. In the video, he stated: "When it comes to the Kurdish issue, CHP is very different. The Kurdish people have been working hard in Nusaybin for years, voting for the CHP despite the trustees. But when it comes to the rights of Kurds, CHP does not stand by us. For this reason, I am resigning."
"THOSE WHO DO NOT LOVE THE KURDISH PEOPLE..."
One of Akan's most striking statements was: "Those who do not love the Kurdish people should not love us either."
