CHP General Chairman Özgür Özel stated regarding the "convention debate" initiated by some CHP deputies on social media, "As the CHP General Chairman, I am ending this debate. From now on, no CHP member should engage the party and the public with such inward-looking agendas." In the discussions, Özel, who apologized on behalf of all the wrongdoers without distinguishing between the right and the wrong, said, "I absolutely call on everyone who values my words from CHP not to engage in these debates." ORHAN SARIBAL ALSO RAISED A STIR IN CHPThe debate, which started with Istanbul Deputy Oğuz Kaan Salıcı's statements criticizing General Chairman Özgür Özel and the party administration, escalated. Bursa Deputy Orhan Sarıbal harshly criticized Özel, who said, "As the CHP General Chairman, I am ending this debate. From now on, no CHP member should engage the party and the public with such inward-looking agendas." Sarıbal stated that Özel's remarks reflected a "arrogant approach" and mentioned that the normalization process has serious issues regarding democracy and freedoms. In his statement, Sarıbal used the following expressions: "The Republican People's Party, in line with the principle of social democracy, adopts an egalitarian and participatory governance approach aimed at establishing a democratic state structure in Turkey, ensuring social justice, protecting individual freedoms, and increasing the welfare of the people." "OUR CHAIRMAN'S NORMALIZATION STRATEGY HAS SERIOUS PROBLEMS"At the core of our party lies a struggle based on social democracy and aimed at the goal of a democratic state. This historical accumulation shows that our party is open to internal evaluation and self-criticism, which are fundamental to democracy in every situation. This approach is a force that directs our party not only to the problems of the people but also to the continuous need for development and transformation within itself. Recently, the 'softening' or 'normalization' strategy pursued by our General Chairman is seen as a serious problem regarding democracy and freedoms, which are already under siege in our country. "A WORRISOME IMAGE OF EMULATING THE METHODS OF THE POWER"Perhaps for the first time in the recent history of our party, a large group of deputies has made intense criticisms directly towards the General Chairman and management decisions in a group meeting. The discomfort expressed by Oğuz Kaan Salıcı reflects a concern felt by many party members. However, the response to this concern, the extremely rude attitude of our spokesperson Deniz Yücel, is detrimental to our party's deep-rooted democratic, pluralistic, and tolerant structure. This style is seen as a reflection of an almost resentful attitude towards the elders, experiences, and values brought from the past of our party, and it creates a worrying image of emulating the methods of the power. "AN ARROGANT APPROACH"Especially if our General Chairman's words, "No one should beg for a convention from me," carry a threatening nature as an arrogant approach fed by the power of authority, it is unworthy of both our party's deep-rooted democratic culture and the promises we made to the public. The convention is the will of the party delegates beyond a personal decision. Our party should not stray from its democratic ideals and the culture of listening to the voice of its people; our goal should be to strengthen the belief in democracy in our country and to rebuild a true democracy that safeguards the peace of our people with a tradition of solidarity and collective decision-making embraced sincerely. Our struggle today is to re-establish a multi-voiced, free Turkey against the single-man understanding of the Palace regime.
