A critical development has occurred in the investigation regarding the death of 1-year-old Altay baby and the poisoning of 3 individuals following the fumigation of an apartment in Izmir. The agricultural engineer and his assistant, who were taken into custody, have been arrested and sent to prison for the charge of "intentional murder using chemical weapons." The prosecutor has requested that the defendants be sentenced to life imprisonment.

On November 11, 2024, a pesticide application against a bedbug infestation in an apartment located in the Kahramanlar neighborhood of Konak district in Izmir ended in tragedy. Following the application, 1-year-old Altay Toprak Kınalı, who lived on the third floor, lost his life, and 3 residents of the building were hospitalized.

INVESTIGATION DEEPENED

After the incident, reports expected from the 1st and 5th Specialization Boards of the Ministry of Justice's Forensic Medicine Institution were submitted to the file regarding the suspects who were released under judicial control. Upon determining that the deaths and poisonings were directly related to the heavy chemical pesticide used, the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the investigation to be deepened.

AGRICULTURAL ENGINEER AND ASSISTANT RE-ARRESTED

The prosecutor's office issued a new arrest warrant for the agricultural engineer who carried out the pesticide application and the person who assisted him on December 11, 2025. The two suspects captured by police teams were referred to the Izmir 4th Criminal Court of Peace with an emphasis on 'possible intent'. The court decided to arrest both suspects, considering the evidence and the severity of the crime.

"CHEMICAL WEAPON" ACCUSATION

Shortly after the reports, the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office completed the indictment and sent it to the Izmir Heavy Penal Court. The prosecutor requested life imprisonment for the detained suspects B.Ö. and E.G. for "intentional killing using a chemical weapon," and up to 4 years in prison for each of them for "intentional injury with a weapon" concerning the poisoning of 5 people. The prepared indictment was sent to the relevant heavy penal court. The trial of the defendants will begin in the coming days at the Heavy Penal Court.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On November 11, 2024, in an apartment in the Konak district of Izmir, 1-year-old Altay Toprak Kınalı died from poisoning three days after a pest control treatment, while 5 people who were taken to the hospital were discharged after treatment, and the building was evacuated.

Among the suspects taken into custody were B.Ö. (47), the owner of the company that conducted the pesticide application, and E.G. (44), who assisted him. The suspects were later released under judicial control.

The 5th Forensic Medicine Specialization Board of the Ministry of Justice stated that baby Altay died due to exposure to chemical phosphine gas. The 1st Forensic Medicine Specialization Board also reported that the baby's death was due to poisoning caused by the pesticide applied for the insects in the building.

Suspects B.Ö. and E.G. were re-arrested following the reports from the specialization boards.
