Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç stated that the regulation regarding women's surnames was preserved in the 9th Judicial Package and a new arrangement was made referring to the reasons for cancellation by the Constitutional Court. Additionally, Minister Tunç mentioned that it is necessary to wait for the verdict of the murder case in Balıkesir and that he has no information yet about the accident file involving the daughter of former Red Crescent President Kerem Kınık.

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated that in the regulation known as the 9th Judicial Package, the provision "A woman takes her husband's surname when she gets married, and she can also use her maiden name if she wishes" was preserved in the Justice Commission in the same way, but a new regulation was made by referring to the reasons for cancellation by the Constitutional Court without disrupting the current HTML.

Minister Tunç, who attended SETA's July 15 Symposium, answered journalists' questions after the symposium.

When asked if there would be any changes regarding the regulation on women's surnames, Minister Tunç said that the issue was related to the 9th Judicial Package.

Tunç stated that the discussions on the judicial package in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Justice Commission have been completed and thanked all commission members.

Tunç stated that there are more than 30 articles in the package and explained that important regulations aimed at increasing the effectiveness of judicial services, ensuring that citizens benefit from judicial services more effectively and efficiently, speeding up the judiciary, and ensuring its fair manifestation are included.

Tunç stated that the package also includes regulations on the development of alternative dispute resolution methods, the rapid conclusion of files and cases in the appellate process, reducing defamation crimes through social media, visual or written press, and regulations regarding the electronic sale in the execution and bankruptcy system.

Tunç stated that the regulations canceled by the Constitutional Court in the Civil Code are also included in the package and stated that one of them is related to women's surnames.

Tunç reminded that according to the Civil Code, a woman takes her husband's surname when she gets married, and she can also use her maiden name if she wishes, and said, "The Constitutional Court made a cancellation decision here, and after the cancellation decision, that gap needed to be regulated again. We submitted our draft work to our parliamentary group, and they also made evaluations, and the provision 'A woman takes her husband's surname when she gets married, and she can also use her maiden name if she wishes' was preserved in the Justice Commission in the same way, but a new regulation was made by referring to the reasons of our Constitutional Court. That's the situation.".

"We need to wait for the decision of the judiciary"

Minister Tunç answered the question about the verdict in the case of the murder of Ata Emre Akman, a university student working as a motorcycle courier in Balıkesir, as follows:

"The murder in Balıkesir was a brutal murder that deeply hurt all of us. Our wish is that such crimes do not happen in our country. Of course, when a crime is committed, it must be punished. Our independent and impartial judiciary has given the necessary punishment. Of course, due to being under 18 years old, he had to be sentenced to 24 years in prison. There was a decision regarding the acquittal of the instigator. The Chief Public Prosecutor appealed because the decision was contrary to the opinion. It will continue within the process of the independent and impartial judiciary. There is an appellate review, there is a review by the Court of Cassation. Therefore, we need to wait for the decision of the judiciary on this matter."

"If there is an error in the content of the file, it will definitely be corrected through objection"

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç also answered the question "There was an accident involving the daughter of former Red Crescent President Kerem Kınık, resulting in death. She was released under judicial control. Do you have any information about the file?" as follows: "I don't have any information about the file yet. But let's look at this, if there is an error in the content of the file, it will definitely be corrected through objection. In this regard, it would not be correct for us to make a comment from here about the decision that the judiciary will make regarding the file, but if there is a faulty procedure, it can be corrected through objection."
