A terrifying moment was captured on camera when a passenger, who lost control, attempted to open the aircraft door during the flight and was subdued by other passengers.
In striking footage, a man attempting to open the aircraft door 30 minutes before landing is seen being restrained by other passengers.
Other footage shows military personnel boarding the plane and taking away the bloodied man in handcuffs.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 5, around 08:00, on Copa Airlines flight CM204 from Brazil's capital, Brasilia, to Panama City.
Passengers Marcelo Ribeiro and Everaldo Torres subdued the man who ran to the back of the plane with a plastic knife taken from a food tray.
According to Brazilian media, the troubled passenger attempted to take a cabin crew member hostage in order to open the aircraft door.
Ribeiro and Elvarado, with the help of other male and female passengers on the plane, had to struggle to prevent the man from opening the door.
51-year-old photojournalist Cristiano Carvalho, who was on the plane, recorded the moment the passenger was subdued.
Carvalho stated, "Despite the warning, he passed the rear emergency exit door. Then he started to move forward and tried to open the door. Then one cabin crew member started screaming, and the other tried to hold him back, but the man was too strong, so they couldn't succeed."
Carvalho also mentioned that all the passengers turned back to understand the situation and pursued the man who continued to resist.
"They beat him almost until he lost consciousness," he added.
Copa Airlines stated: "On November 5, 2024, on our flight CM204 from Brasilia to Panama, a troubled passenger attempted to open one of the aircraft doors during the landing phase. The crew acted quickly and implemented the necessary security protocols to regain control of the situation with the help of some passengers."
The airline added that when the plane arrived in Panama, "a national security team boarded the aircraft to take the passenger into custody for the authorities."
The company stated: "Thanks to the professionalism of the crew, the safety of the flight and the passengers was maintained."
