WHAT HAPPENED?

On December 3, Yoon declared martial law on the grounds that "the opposition was engaged in activities against the state," and as a result, the National Assembly initiated an impeachment process against him. Yoon, whose powers were suspended and who was taken for questioning on January 15, became the first South Korean President to be arrested before the impeachment process against him was completed. Stating that the investigation against him was "illegal," Yoon requested the cancellation of the arrest warrant on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction. Yoon's appeal against detention made last month was accepted by the Seoul Central District Court yesterday.

The Constitutional Court's final decision on whether Yoon will be removed from office was reported to be announced to the public this month.
