The thunderstorm that started in the Bergama district of İzmir at night caused flooding. Streets and avenues turned into lakes, and some houses and workplaces were flooded. Vehicles struggled to move through the water that accumulated on the roads, and many vehicles were stranded in the water. The stream in the Bahçelievler neighborhood overflowed due to the rainfall. Citizens whose homes, workplaces, and vehicles were damaged due to the rain experienced hardship.
MUNICIPALITY, AFAD, AND POLICE TEAMS STARTED WORK
İzmir Metropolitan and Bergama Municipality teams carried out rescue operations for stranded citizens and vehicles. Police and Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) teams also supported the evacuation efforts in flooded homes and workplaces. Some citizens tried to clean their flooded homes and workplaces with their own means. Bergama Mayor Tanju Çelik closely monitored the ongoing efforts in the area.
"EVERYTHING IS UNDER MUD AND SLUDGE"
Many houses in the Ege Boyu Adalar Site in the Fatih neighborhood, one of the most affected areas by the rainfall, were flooded.
The site's manager, Mehmet Değerli, stated that the water channel behind the blocks was inactive and that they had previously applied to the İzmir Water and Sewerage Administration (İZSU) for its rehabilitation.
Değerli claimed that the flooding occurred due to the failure to carry out the necessary works, saying, "The sole responsibility for this disgrace lies with the Bergama Municipality and İZSU. People's refrigerators have toppled over and been destroyed in their homes. Everything is under mud and sludge. My car has also been moved to the opposite sidewalk due to the flood. The situation is terrible. We have damages, and we want them to be compensated."
"WE CALLED THE AUTHORITIES AT NIGHT, THEY DIDN'T ANSWER"
Güngör Savaş, whose house was flooded, recounted that he went outside to get his dog and bag. He stated that he spent the night at a neighbor's house and mentioned that his home was filled with mud.
Adnan Topuzoğlu, who lived in Adıyaman and experienced the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, said he moved to Ankara after the earthquake and was in Bergama to visit relatives. Expressing his sadness about the incident, Topuzoğlu said, "We faced this while watching in disbelief. We called the authorities at 2:00 AM, but they didn't answer. I lost my relatives and two vehicles in the earthquake, and now I've lost two vehicles here as well."
STATEMENT FROM THE MUNICIPALITY
In a statement from the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, it was noted that more than 137 kilograms of rainfall fell per square meter in the district, and the Bayatlı, Ayvazeli, and Gökmen streams overflowed.
The statement recorded that 30 people stranded in the floods were rescued, and it was stated, "Due to the rainfall, flooding occurred in 10 of the 19 central neighborhoods. The heavy rains most affected the Fatih, Bahçelievler, and Maltepe neighborhoods. A total of 216 flood reports were received by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, and 74 of them were intervened by fire brigade teams."
