FIRST FEMALE GOVERNORMohsena al-Maithawi was appointed as the governor of Suwayda, a city with a significant Druze population, at the request of the public. Thus, Al-Maithawi made history as Syria's first female governor. WHO IS MOHSENA AL-MAITHAWI?Born in 1970 in the village of Libene in Suwayda, Al-Maithawi graduated from the Faculty of Commerce and Economics at Damascus University. A member of the Druze community, Mohsena al-Maithawi worked in the administration of the Dera district, which is part of Suwayda, in the 1990s and held various positions, including the head of the Treasury department. However, Al-Maithawi resigned in March 2023 due to corruption in the administration. WOMEN IN GOVERNANCE IN THE NEW SYRIASince the overthrow of Assad on December 8, women have also had a say in the newly established government in Syria.
