A case of cirrhosis in a patient in Giresun, caused by the displacement of all organs, has gained attention not only in Turkey but also in the scientific community worldwide, marking a significant development. It has entered the medical literature under the name "Giresun Syndrome."
Giresun Training and Research Hospital has achieved an important success that will be recorded in the world medical literature. Doctors who described a case characterized by the displacement of all organs and the subsequent development of cirrhosis named this condition "Giresun Syndrome."
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cumhur Dülger, the Head of the Gastroenterology Department at Giresun Training and Research Hospital, emphasized in his statement that this disease has not been previously defined in the world, saying, "For the first time in the world, we detected cirrhosis due to heart failure in a patient whose organs were all reversed in a mirror image. We brought this case to the medical literature with the approval of referees at national and international congresses and named it 'Giresun Syndrome.'
"PATIENTS NEED LIVER TRANSPLANTATION" Dülger noted that the reverse placement of organs is rarely seen, but in this case, all organs were displaced, and cirrhosis developed as well, stating, "These patients cannot function at their normal capacities, cannot walk, and their lifespans are shortened. The deterioration of liver functions becomes more pronounced over time, and if appropriate treatment is not provided, the disease can reach life-threatening levels. After ten to twelve years of cirrhosis, patients need liver transplantation. Some undergo transplantation, while others cannot, resulting in shorter life expectancy. If not treated appropriately, they belong to a group of diseases that are life-threatening. They live for many years without realizing it, but a time comes when liver function deteriorates. In this case, intervention is necessary. We have started the required treatments from both cardiac and liver perspectives. Currently, the patient's condition is good," he said.
"A CASE SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME RATHER THAN RARELY" Dr. Gökhan Aydın, who provided information about the symptoms of the disease named 'Giresun Syndrome' encountered for the first time in the world, stated, "There are rare diseases, but this is a case seen for the first time rather than being rare. I also saw it for the first time in my clinical life. The patient presents to us with signs of liver cirrhosis. The most important symptoms include shortness of breath, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, and complaints of weakness. When we look at the patient's overall laboratory results, we first make preliminary diagnoses. Then, in the definitions, we note that the positions of all the patient's organs have changed, and since it is a case we have not seen before, we recognize it in the literature. We wonder if there is such a patient when providing treatment? How have other physicians approached it, and what are their treatment realities? Because when we provide treatment, we do not only consider our own opinions but also take into account the practices of other physicians. However, we found that there was no similar case. Based on this, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Cumhur, we tried to explain it by publishing it in the medical literature," he expressed.
Chief Physician Dr. Fazlı Kulaklı also emphasized the importance of this success, stating, "It is not easy to define a syndrome, but we attach great importance to this success emerging from Giresun. This syndrome will announce Giresun's name to the whole world and will gain an important place in the medical literature."
