A TikTok phenomenon living in Florida with over 300,000 followers was arrested after showing products stolen from a local store in a video.
22-year-old Marlena Velez is accused of stealing more than $500 worth of goods from a store in Cape Coral on October 30. The store's security team discovered that the suspect used a fake barcode at the self-checkout and scanned the products at lower prices.
Police reported that a total of 16 items, including household goods and clothing worth $500.32, were stolen. After reviewing security camera footage, police shared the suspect's photo on social media for identification.
Velez, a mother of two who creates content on TikTok, was reported by one of her followers. The informant also provided Velez's Instagram account to the police. On Velez's TikTok account, the video she recorded on the day of the theft matched the clothing she wore while shopping, as seen in the security camera footage.
Riley Carter, a spokesperson for the Cape Coral Police Department, stated, "She gave herself away on social media."
Velez's criminal history also came to light. She was arrested in 2019 for stealing a friend's car and crashing it, and for shoplifting from Walmart in July 2023. She had recently received a six-month probation sentence for her last theft.
Former friend Amanda Santana said, "She lives irresponsibly and displays a lifestyle that does not match her behavior."
The police department stated that being a social media celebrity would not place Velez above the law and that she would serve her sentence if found guilty.
