It has been learned that Emine Nilay Özkan, who was identified and arrested 18 years after she killed her newborn baby and threw it into a trash container in the İzmit district of Kocaeli, is the owner of a company that provides project and financial management consultancy for the construction sector. In her interrogation at the police station, Özkan claimed that she placed the baby, whom she had miscarried in the bathroom, into a box and threw it into the trash because it was not breathing.
On May 27, 2007, a newborn baby girl was found dead in the trash in the Yahyakaptan neighborhood of İzmit district. The baby's body was buried in the Unclaimed Cemetery belonging to the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Cemetery Directorate. The autopsy report indicated that the baby died by strangulation due to the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck three times, while the investigation remained unsolved.
DNA MATCHED WITH THE BABY 18 YEARS LATER
The Kocaeli Police Department's Homicide Bureau reopened the case eight months ago. All suspects from the closed case were re-interrogated, and the evidence collected at the time of the incident was re-examined. In the eight-month investigation, the fingerprint found in the box where the baby was discovered in a trash container matched with the fingerprint of Emine Nilay Özkan, 18 years ago.
ARRESTED
As part of the investigation, it was determined that Özkan, whose DNA matched with the baby, was the baby's mother. Özkan was captured in the Sapanca district of Sakarya and taken into custody. She was arrested by the court she was brought before yesterday.
KILLER TURNED OUT TO BE A BUSINESSWOMAN
It was also learned that Emine Nilay Özkan, the owner of a company providing project and financial management consultancy for the construction sector, was actively involved in various non-governmental organizations, associations, and chambers. In her police interrogation, Özkan stated that she lived alone at the time of the incident, consumed excessive alcohol, had extramarital relationships with multiple male partners, and did not know which relationship she became pregnant from due to the effects of alcohol, and that she did not tell anyone about her pregnancy.

Continuing her statement, Özkan recounted the day of the incident; she went to the toilet due to bleeding, claimed she miscarried in the toilet, and that the baby she held in her arms was not breathing. Expressing her fear, Özkan said she threw the baby she placed in a box into the trash and had been living with the burden of the incident for years.
