A white mother who tried to make her adopted black daughter balance a rice sack on her head by saying "It's in your blood" has defended her comments after receiving online criticism. The video, filmed by Kaylee Wilson, a mother of four, shows her 9-year-old adopted daughter Wella struggling to balance a 9-kilogram rice sack on her head in a warehouse store, leading to harsh criticism. In the video, Wilson can be heard telling her Ghanaian-born daughter to "put it on like an African." As the young girl struggles to balance the heavy sack, Wilson says, "Come on, come on. You should know how to do this. It's in your blood." A caption appears on the video saying, "We will do more training when we get to Nigeria." Later, it is seen that Wilson attempts the same task and realizes the weight of the sack. Wilson responded to the criticism on Instagram, saying, "We have lived in various African countries for over 2 years, learning the culture and spending time with people. They are not offended and are VERY HAPPY when we embrace their culture." Online commentators harshly criticized Wilson's remarks as culturally insensitive and disrespectful. Many people stated that this behavior constitutes child abuse and that the young girl deserves a better family. In another social media post, it was announced that the family plans to adopt a third child from Africa and move to Nigeria for at least six months this year. Wilson wrote, "In the past few months, we have realized even more that adopting children is our true calling - to go and get the children that God points us to and bring them to our farm for healing, love, and to be raised in our family."
