The paramedic put their own socks on the injured child who was barefoot.

On the Konya-Ankara highway, in the Karaömerler area, a minibus with license plate 71 FN 159, driven by Nurettin Z, overturned after losing control on the slippery road due to snowfall. An emergency medical technician, Aysel Göçer (32), who was dispatched to the accident site where four members of the same family were injured, made a gesture towards an injured child that made people say, "humanity is not dead."

HE PUT HIS OWN SOCKS ON THE INJURED CHILD

Göçer noticed that 8-year-old injured Eymen Z did not have shoes or socks on his feet and put her own socks on him inside the ambulance. Those moments were captured on a mobile phone camera. After the initial interventions, it was learned that the health condition of the family, who was taken to Konya Selçuk Medical Faculty Hospital, was good.

"HIS FEET WERE BARE AND AS COLD AS ICE"

Aysel Göçer, who has been working in 112 Emergency Health Services for 11 years, stated that they intervened in harsh weather conditions. She expressed that the weather was stormy and snowy at the time of the incident, saying, "When we arrived at the scene, we saw a vehicle that had overturned into the ditch. We had two children and a mother and father. Thank God they had survived the accident with minor scratches. We took father Nurettin Z. and 8-year-old Eymen Z. as deemed appropriate by our team. When we first took him into the ambulance, he was in his father's arms. In that darkness, his bare feet immediately caught my eye. They were bare and as cold as ice."

"I TOOK OFF MY SOCK WITHOUT HESITATION AND PUT IT ON"

Göçer, who said she covered the injured child with a blanket, stated, "He hadn't yet recovered from the shock of the accident. He was still shivering in the cold. I took off my sock without hesitation and put it on him. I didn't even notice that my friend was recording a video. I put the sock on like that, we made our intervention, and we conducted our examination. We transferred him to our hospital."

"IF HE WERE MY CHILD, HE WOULD HAVE WANTED TO WEAR THE SOCK"

Göçer expressed that being a healthcare worker weighed heavily alongside being a mother, saying she placed Eymen in the position of her own child. She said, "When I saw him like that, I thought if he were my child, he would have wanted to wear that sock on his foot. Because you have had an accident, you have no means, maybe you can't find your belongings. In that cold, in the snow, in the storm, whatever it is, you might not be able to think under that shock. I would also want my child to have a sock put on his foot. Without any hesitation, I took off my sock and put it on him. We might have an elderly aunt or an elderly uncle. Rest assured, we would approach them with the same compassion and mercy."

"FIRST I THOUGHT, 'WILL THEY BE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH ME PUTTING IT ON?'"

Göçer, who initially hesitated, said:

"At first, I thought, 'Will they think it's a dirty sock? Should I take it off? Will they be uncomfortable with me putting it on?' But after I felt the coldness when I touched Eymen's foot, I said, 'There is probably nothing beyond this.' I thought it was better than standing barefoot in the freezing weather. I put the sock on, and I wrapped him tightly with the blanket. He thanked me with his gaze. That was enough for me, actually."
