The United Nations International Organization for Migration reported that last week, 250,000 people returned to their homes in Syria following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime, and among them, 100,000 were Syrians living abroad.

The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) issued a written statement regarding the developments in Syria.

100 THOUSAND SYRIANS HAVE RETURNED HOME

The statement pointed out that since the outbreak of the civil war in Syria in 2011, there has been significant destruction and widespread displacement, noting that more than 6 million Syrians have left the country and 5.5 million have been internally displaced. The statement said, "17 million people in Syria still need assistance, and 90% of the entire population lives below the poverty line. Thousands of Syrian refugees fleeing the war are now returning home, while others are assessing whether local conditions allow for a safe return. Last week, approximately 250,000 people returned home, of which 100,000 were Syrians living abroad."

ALL CITIES IN RUINS

The statement emphasized that Syrians have witnessed unimaginable levels of violence and destruction during the war, noting that all cities are in ruins. IOM Director General Amy Pope, whose views were included in the statement and who is currently in Syria for meetings, reiterated that they will provide vital support to meet Syria's enormous humanitarian needs, promote recovery, and stabilize the population.

Pope stated, "This is a moment of great hope and a historic opportunity for the Syrian people, who have endured immense suffering and turmoil over more than 14 years of devastating conflict. Although the challenges are immense, the international community must support Syrians in rebuilding their lives and securing a better future."

Pope noted that she provided information to donor countries, partners, and diplomatic missions regarding the deployment of IOM teams to Damascus and called on the international community to mobilize resources for the return of refugees. Pope assessed, "Organized and voluntary returns can be supported when conditions are met."

Rema Jamous Imseis, the Middle East Director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), had reported that one million Syrians are expected to return by June 2025.
