U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for the sale of TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, by 75 days with an executive order, stating that the app will be banned in the country if it is not sold.
The deadline set for the ban on TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, is April 5, and just hours before that, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new executive order.
75 DAYS EXTENDED
In a statement made through his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, "My administration is working very hard on a deal to save TikTok, and we have made great progress. The deal requires further work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed. Therefore, I am signing an executive order to ensure that TikTok remains open for another 75 days."
"WE DO NOT WANT TIKTOK TO 'DIE'"
In his statement, Trump emphasized that he hopes to continue working with China in good faith, saying, "As far as I understand, they are not very happy with our tariffs (necessary for fair and balanced trade between China and the U.S.!). This proves that tariffs are the strongest economic tool and are very important for our national security! We do not want TikTok to 'die.' We look forward to working to close a deal with TikTok and China. Thank you for considering this issue."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Immediately after the U.S. Supreme Court approved the law that foresaw the ban on TikTok in January, access to the platform was restricted. On January 20, the day Trump took office, the platform was reopened after a one-day ban. On January 21, Trump signed an executive order extending the TikTok ban by 75 days, with the deadline for the deal set for April 5. Trump had stated that he wanted the U.S. to hold a 50% stake in TikTok through a partnership.
Meanwhile, the U.S. House of Representatives had approved a bill last year that included a ban on TikTok in the country if its assets in the U.S. were not sold to another company. Following the vote, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul stated, "This bill protects Americans, especially American children, from the harmful effects of Chinese propaganda on the TikTok app. This app is a spy balloon on Americans' phones."
