The Eastern Black Sea Region continues to be one of Turkey's most important areas in terms of mining, thanks to its metallic mineral deposits. The region, which is particularly rich in reserves of copper, lead, zinc, and gold, continues to attract the attention of both national and international mining companies.

The Eastern Black Sea Region stands out as one of Turkey's richest areas in terms of mineral potential, thanks to its geological structure. Particularly significant for metallic minerals, the Eastern Black Sea Region draws attention with its gold, copper, lead, and zinc deposits, both economically and strategically.

HIGH DISASTER RISK

The mining sites located in the belt extending from the Russian border to Samsun have been operated at different times throughout history, and today, many mines in this region continue to operate. While exploration activities are ongoing to identify new reserves, experts state that the geological features of the Eastern Black Sea provide an advantage in terms of mineral wealth, but due to the same structure, the region also has a high disaster risk. Due to steep topography, heavy rainfall, and weak soil structure, landslides and rockfalls frequently occur in the region, increasing the importance of environmental and engineering measures in mining activities.

SEARCHES CONTINUE

Prof. Dr. Fatma Gültekin from Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) Department of Geological Engineering, who provided information on the subject, stated that the mineral potential of the Eastern Black Sea Region has been particularly prominent in terms of metallic minerals from the past to the present. Gültekin said, "Copper, lead, and zinc deposits start from the Russian border and extend to Samsun. There have been various studies in these areas from ancient times to the present. We understand their indications from the galleries opened in ancient times. Today, almost all of these sites are being operated. Searches for new sites are also ongoing."

"WE ARE FACING LANDSLIDES"

Pointing out that the disaster risk is high due to the geological structure of the region, Gültekin stated, "The Eastern Black Sea Region is one of the areas with the highest geological disaster risk due to its topographic and climatic features. We are facing disasters such as rockfalls and landslides. Of course, the choice of settlement here is very important. Incorrect site selection and topography can actually cause normal potential natural events to turn into disasters. For this reason, a series of scientific studies or meetings help raise awareness among people about these issues. I think it will also be beneficial for future studies. The most valuable mineral in this region is gold, and both national and international companies are working on it."
