Övünç Şan (29) faced a life-threatening situation when a piece of "şırdan" got stuck in his throat while dining at a restaurant in Adana. He was saved by mathematics teacher Kadir Bardakçı (36), who performed the Heimlich maneuver.
Övünç Şan, who lives in Adana, went to a "şırdan" restaurant with his family after work. While eating "şırdan," a piece of food got lodged in his windpipe. Kadir Bardakçı, a mathematics teacher dining at the same restaurant, rushed to help Şan. Bardakçı, who had previously learned the "Heimlich maneuver" in first aid training provided by the Ministry of National Education, was able to dislodge the piece of "şırdan" from Şan's windpipe using this method. The incident was captured on security cameras.
"I ATE THE ŞIRDAN QUICKLY AND IT GOT STUCK IN MY THROAT"
Övünç Şan said, "After finishing work, I picked up my wife and child from home and came to eat 'şırdan.' The 'şırdan' looked so delicious that, with the appetite of the day, I suddenly started eating quickly. I took such a big bite of the first piece that I initially started coughing. Then, as I tried to swallow the piece, it got stuck in my throat."
"I OWE MY LIFE TO HIM"
Expressing his gratitude to the person who saved him, Şan stated, "I realized I couldn't breathe. Everyone was in a panic; my wife and the people here rushed to help me. Kadir Bey, whom I just met here, is my hero. He brought me back to life; I owe him my life. He dislodged the piece stuck in my throat with the Heimlich maneuver. I started to breathe again, and I thank him very much."
Kadir Bardakçı said, "I heard a commotion while eating. I tried to understand what was happening, and then I realized that the food our friend was eating had gotten stuck in his windpipe. I had learned the Heimlich maneuver through training organized by the Ministry of National Education before. I had never tried it outside of training; this was the first time it happened to us. Thankfully, it worked, and our friend started to breathe again."
