Gunma Prefecture, located north of Japan's capital Tokyo, witnessed a tragic accident. Around 7:30 PM local time, approximately 50 vehicles collided on the Kan-etsu Expressway near the town of Minakami due to adverse weather conditions. The accident, which began with a collision between two trucks during the early hours of the New Year holiday rush, quickly escalated into a massive chain collision due to snow and ice. Fires broke out in 17 of the approximately 50 vehicles involved, prompting the dispatch of numerous fire crews to the scene.
THE HIGHWAY REMAINED CLOSED FOR A LONG TIME
The flames were brought under control after about 7 and a half hours of effort. It was reported that 2 people lost their lives, one in a car and the other in a truck, and 26 people were injured, 5 of whom are in serious condition. Due to the accident, certain sections of the Kan-etsu Expressway remained closed to traffic for an extended period.
AN INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN INITIATED
Officials noted that the region was under a heavy snowfall warning at the time of the incident and stated that the accident was assessed to have occurred due to low visibility and icy conditions. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident.
