Before the important meeting between Ukrainian President Zelensky and U.S. President Trump, Russia launched missile and drone attacks on several regions, including Kiev. At least eight people were injured in the attacks that utilized Shahed-136 kamikaze drones. It was reported that a total of 500 Shahed-136 kamikaze drones, valued at $30,000 each, were deployed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled for tomorrow, and ahead of this meeting, missile and drone attacks were carried out in many regions of Ukraine, especially in the capital Kyiv.
EXPLOSION SOUNDS HEARD IN THE CAPITAL
During the attacks, explosion sounds were heard in Kyiv, and Ukrainian air defense units were put on alert. The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported via the social media platform Telegram that missiles had been fired. The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russian drones targeted the capital and the northeastern and southern regions of the country.
NUMEROUS INJURIES REPORTED
At least eight people were injured in the attacks. As of 08:00 local time (09:00 TRT), it was reported that the attacks were ongoing and that an air raid alert continued in Kyiv.
POLAND LAUNCHED FIGHTER JETS
Due to the attacks, the airports in Rzeszow and Lublin in southeastern Poland were temporarily closed. The Polish Armed Forces launched fighter jets to protect its airspace. Russia has not yet made an official statement regarding the attacks. Ukrainian officials stated that Russia had targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure the day before and intensified attacks on the southern port city of Odesa.
ZELENSKY: 500 DRONES AND 40 MISSILES FIRED
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a written statement that the Russian army continues its attacks on his country.
Zelensky reported that Russia had launched approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles of different types at various regions of Ukraine since the night, stating, "The main target is Kyiv, energy, and civilian infrastructure."
Zelensky recalled that peace talks are ongoing to end the war, asserting that Russia does not want to end the war.
Noting that Russia responded to these negotiations with attacks, Zelensky asked, "So, where is Russia's response to the proposals made by the U.S. and the world to end the war?"
Zelensky emphasized that pressure on Russia should be increased, stating that he would hold meetings today and tomorrow with U.S. President Donald Trump and the leaders of Europe and Canada.
COST OF KAMIKAZE DRONES AVERAGES 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS
Shahid-136 (known as Geran-2 in Russia) stands out as one of the most intensively used one-way attack (kamikaze) drones by Russia in the Ukraine war. Its ability to cover long distances at low to medium speeds, simple body structure, and design suitable for mass production make it frequently preferred in attacks on critical infrastructure as well as in "wave" attacks aimed at wearing down air defenses. Open-source analyses suggest that Russia has updated these systems over time in areas such as navigation/electronic countermeasures and has also increased capacity through local production. While there is no official figure for unit cost, various reports and analyses indicate that the Shahid-136/Geran-2 can be produced in the range of approximately 20,000 to 50,000 dollars, with some assessments suggesting a more realistic level of 50,000 to 70,000 dollars.
ZELENSKY TO MEET WITH TRUMP TOMORROW
Zelensky stated that in the meeting planned for tomorrow with the U.S. President in Florida, the parties would discuss which territories they would control within the framework of an agreement aimed at ending the Ukraine war.
Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv that 90% of the 20-point peace plan prepared under U.S. leadership has been completed and emphasized that security guarantees for Ukraine are one of the key elements of the agreement.
Zelensky stated, "A lot can become clear before the new year," expressing that security guarantees should not remain on paper as in the past. U.S. President Donald Trump said that Washington is the main driving force behind the process. Trump stated, "Nothing will happen without my approval. We will see what it brings."
