In a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, it was announced that starting from February 10, a 15% additional customs duty will be applied to coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States, and a 10% additional customs duty will be applied to crude oil, agricultural equipment, trucks, and some cars. The statement said, "The unilateral customs duties imposed by the United States seriously violate the rules of the World Trade Organization. It not only fails to help solve its own problems but also undermines the normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States."
It was stated that export controls will also be applied to products related to tungsten, tellurium, ruthenium, and molybdenum to protect national security interests. Additionally, the State Administration for Market Regulation of China has launched an investigation into the US-based search engine Google for allegedly violating antitrust laws.
CUSTOMS DUTIES ON MEXICO AND CANADA SUSPENDED FOR 30 DAYS US President Donald Trump suspended the decision to impose a 25% customs duty on Mexico and Canada for 30 days in exchange for strict measures against immigration and drug trafficking. Trump warned that if the flow of drugs into the US does not stop, he could further increase customs duties on China, stating, "We hope China will stop sending us fentanyl. If they don't, tariffs will increase significantly." While China described fentanyl as "America's problem," it stated that it would appeal against customs duties at the World Trade Organization and take other countermeasures.
CANADA AND MEXICO TAKE ACTION Canada agreed to deploy new technology and personnel at the US border and to cooperate in combating organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering. Mexico announced that it would deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the US border to prevent illegal immigration and the flow of drugs. Trump stated in a social media post, "As President, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of all Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial result."
