Massive boulders that broke off from a mountainous slope fell onto a "Tata Sumo" type taxi traveling on the Udaipur-Killar road in the Lahaul-Spiti region. 13 people, including a 6-month-old baby, lost their lives in the vehicle crushed under the rock. It was claimed that two people managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle just before the rock fell.
CRUSHED UNDER A PILE OF ROCKS
The disaster occurred at the Kadu Nala location on the Udaipur-Killar highway in the Lahaul-Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh. According to information obtained, huge rock masses that broke off from the mountainous slope fell at high speed onto the "Tata Sumo" type passenger vehicle passing by. While the vehicle, crushed under tons of rocks falling from meters high, was reduced to scrap, a scene of absolute carnage unfolded in the area.
6-MONTH-OLD BABY ALSO LOST HER LIFE
Police and local administration teams dispatched to the scene after the incident announced that 13 people inside the vehicle lost their lives in the terrible accident. It was reported that among the deceased was a 6-month-old baby. While some eyewitnesses and local sources claimed that there were a total of 15 people in the vehicle and that 2 people managed to escape by jumping out at the last moment, official authorities confirmed the death toll as 13.
LANDSLIDE ALERT ISSUED IN THE REGION
Numerous health, police, fire, and search and rescue teams were dispatched to the accident site following the report. While transportation was disrupted due to the large rocks blocking the road, extensive efforts were initiated to clear the road and remove the debris using heavy machinery. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu gave instructions to authorities for close monitoring of the rescue operations.
Meanwhile, noting that the risk of landslides and rockfalls on steep mountain slopes is at a high level in the state under the influence of heavy monsoon rains, drivers were warned not to use mountain roads unless necessary.
While Tata Sumo type vehicles have a maximum passenger capacity of 10, it was understood that the taxi was carrying passengers exceeding this capacity.
