About 60,000 people have been evacuated and 29,000 have been instructed not to leave their locations due to ongoing forest fires in Madrid and Avila, Spain.
According to the Spanish EFE news agency, it is estimated that approximately 45 thousand hectares of land have burned in two major forest fires in the cities of Madrid and Avila.
60 THOUSAND PEOPLE EVACUATED
In a statement made on the social media platform of the US-based X company by the Spanish government, it was reported that 59,488 people were evacuated due to the fires, including 30,000 from Madrid and 29,488 from Avila.
The statement indicated that approximately 29,000 people in these two cities were instructed not to leave their locations.
Local authorities stated that firefighting efforts continue with 1,201 military personnel, 400 land vehicles, 1,300 security forces, 110 civil defense personnel, and 20 aircraft.
Meanwhile, in addition to the fires in Madrid and Avila, forest fires are also ongoing in Leon, Huesca, Teruel, and Cordoba.
1 PERSON LOST THEIR LIFE
In a statement, authorities reported that one person lost their life in the forest fires in the Manises region of Valencia, and five people affected by the fire were hospitalized.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in a statement during his visit to the region, expressed that "the fire is complex and the winds are variable."
Sanchez reported that approximately 130 thousand hectares of land have burned in the country so far in 2026.
