CAME AFTER THE MOTORCYCLIST WAS CRUSHED UNDER POLICE VEHICLE
This came after protests that intensified about two weeks ago against rising economic inequality and parliamentary allowances, following the incident where a motorcyclist was crushed under a police vehicle.
PROTESTS IN INDONESIA
On August 28, security forces intervened in a demonstration near the National Parliament building in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, against the salaries and high allowances of members of parliament. During this time, a motorcycle, believed to have passed near the protest site, was crushed by a police vehicle, and the rider, 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, died in the hospital. Protests intensified following Kurniawan's death.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that he condemned the "excessive actions" of the police officers on duty at the scene, saying, "If it is determined that there were violations of the applicable rules and inappropriate behavior, we will apply the strictest penalties in accordance with the law." Following the incident, 7 police officers were detained as part of the investigation launched.
HOMES OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT LOOTED
The protests spread to cities including Yogyakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, and Medan, especially in the capital Jakarta. According to local media reports, protesters also looted the homes of some members of parliament.
Subianto canceled a planned visit to China on September 3 to closely monitor the protests across the country. Later, Subianto announced that some parliamentary policies, including the temporary suspension of allowances and overseas travel for members of parliament, had been decided to be canceled. However, contrary to his previous statement, Subianto went to China.
