President's Chief Advisor Mehmet Uçum reacted to the statements of the European Parliament's Turkey Rapporteur Nacho Sanchez Amor regarding Turkey-EU relations by saying, "Amor's language is a clear indication of the arrogance produced by a mentality of colonialism and superiority."

Mehmet Uçum responded to the evaluations of the European Parliament's Turkey Rapporteur Nacho Sanchez Amor regarding Turkey-EU relations.

"IT IS CLEAR THAT THE EU IS NOT WELL-INTENTIONED"

Uçum, in a statement titled "The sick man of Europe, the European Union does not give up on superiority" made through his social media account X, said, "European Parliament Turkey Rapporteur Amor stated, 'We are open to developing defense ties with Turkey, but there is no membership on the horizon.' He claimed that 'the European Union is a club of democracies.' He pointed out the need for 'steps to be taken regarding the Anti-Terror Law and data protection for visa liberalization, and the principle of legal certainty for the Customs Union.'

He admitted that the issues regarding membership are more about anti-Turkey political approaches than partnership law. He cited Turkey's occasional appointment of trustees in the context of combating the supporters of terrorism and mentioned some convicted individuals as negative examples. It is clear that the EU, which wants to weaken Turkey's fight against terrorism both in terms of legislation and practice, is not well-intentioned. More importantly, it is absolutely unacceptable for the EU to view Turkey solely in terms of Europe's security needs," he said.

"IT IS A SIGN OF THE SUPERIORITY PRODUCED BY A COLONIAL MENTALITY"

Uçum, who wrote, "Our President Erdoğan shows a sincere approach regarding EU membership," stated, "In contrast, the European Union behaves completely insincerely and hypocritically. Amor's language is a clear indication of the arrogance produced by a mentality of colonialism.

In EU member countries that claim to be champions of democracy, there are many examples against democracy and law, such as legal massacres like the NSU trials, widespread human rights violations like those of the yellow vests, and systematic police practices that violate personal rights. The implicit/explicit police state practices in member countries, as well as the normalization of xenophobia, anti-blackness, Islamophobia, and racism, have become commonplace. The EU's conscious blindness and supportive attitudes towards genocide, except for isolated examples in Gaza, show how far they are from humanity and democracy," he expressed.

"THEY SHOULD DEAL WITH THEIR OWN CRISES"

Uçum continued his statement with the following remarks: "In fact, the European Union is on its last legs; they have become a spectacle in the pandemic and Gaza. The European Union is the 'sick man' of today. Those who speak about this sick man should first look at themselves. The sick man of the European Union cannot give lessons on democracy and law to Turkey. They should deal with their own democracy and law crises. They should address social justice issues. The languages they have established with a colonial and superior mentality have no value. The relationship between Turkey and the EU can only be an equal-level relationship.

"THE ERA OF VERTICAL RELATIONSHIPS HAS LONG ENDED"

The era of vertical relationships has long ended. It would be prudent for everyone to realize this. Moreover, today, direct relations with member countries have become much more important than relations with the EU. Turkey is certainly open to equal rights and equal-level relations with every member country. Finally, let us state that if there is to be a membership process for Turkey in the future, it will only be conditional on Turkey developing partnership law with the EU together. Otherwise, no one should expect Turkey to accept the partnership law that the EU imposes on it without objection."
