Mehmet Akif İnan Anatolian High School chemistry teacher Mevlüt Külcü (40), who was on his way to Friday prayer in Konya, was hit from behind by a car driven by İsmail Andaç (41) while waiting at a red light on Antalya Ring Road.
MEVLÜT TEACHER, FATHER OF 2 CHILDREN, LOST HIS LIFE
Külcü, who was in the car that was split in two, lost his life, while Andaç was injured. Father of 2 children, Mevlüt Külcü was buried in Ilgın district.
THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE THAT HIT WAS 229 KILOMETERS
The speed of the car driven by İsmail Andaç was determined by the teams of the Konya Police Department Traffic Inspection Branch through the footage from the cameras at the intersection, due to the absence of brake marks. The teams found that the distance from the moment Andaç's car entered the camera angle to the moment it hit Mevlüt Külcü's vehicle was 207 meters, and that the car covered this distance in 3.5 seconds. Based on this data, it was calculated that the speed of the vehicle driven by Andaç was 229 kilometers.
"I DON'T KNOW HOW MY CAR REACHED THAT SPEED"
İsmail Andaç, who was arrested after his treatment, stated in his testimony that he had just bought the car, saying, "I have always adhered to speed limits. I was driving my car in this manner. I don't remember the rest. I don't know how my car reached 229 kilometers. I had just bought my car. There was a problem with gear shifting, and I had taken it to the mechanic to get it fixed. However, there was no mechanical issue with my car at the time of the accident. I think the accident occurred because I lost control of myself for an unknown reason. I wish I had died instead. I didn't even step on the brake, they said, 'There are no brake marks at all.' I lost control of myself. The deceased had two children, and I also have two children. It is impossible for me to have caused such an incident intentionally," he said.
"I WENT TO THE FORENSIC MEDICINE INSTEAD OF THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT"
Külcü's wife, biology teacher Kadriye Başak Külcü, said, "I received news from my daughter's teacher. I thought she was injured and went. I thought, how could there be an accident in the city? I never imagined that such a brutality could happen to us. While I was thinking I would go to the intensive care unit, I ended up in front of the Forensic Medicine. Of course, we believe in fate, but we concluded that this is a murder, a brutality under the name of a traffic accident, and that a reckless behavior took my husband away from us," she said.
"I BURIED HALF OF MY SOUL"
Külcü, who expressed his trust in justice, said, "I want a precedent decision from the justice system. When the accident footage is examined, it is seen that there are no brake marks. We think that this was not just a traffic accident, but that someone set out to take a life. We want this to be treated not as an unintentional traffic accident, but as an incident where someone set out to take a life. Of course, we have infinite trust in justice and our lawyers. As a mother, a wife, and a teacher, and as someone who buried half of her soul with her husband, I demand this sensitivity from our justice. I hope they hear our voice and make the right decision. I hope this person does not get a few years of punishment and then set out again to take someone’s life. Our hearts are broken; I don't want other children to be left fatherless like my children," he said.
"MY SON IS CALLING HIS FATHER IN THE HOPE THAT HE WILL ANSWER THE PHONE"
Külcü explained that her son could not accept the situation, saying:
"We cannot evaluate this accident within any logical framework. I do not think the driver experienced a loss of consciousness. We know that my husband was not targeted, but this is an accident that was set out to kill a person. It would be better to call it murder. My 10-year-old son cannot accept his father's death. He is calling his father from my phone, hoping that he will answer."
"MY HUSBAND TOUCHED THE LIVES OF MANY CHILDREN"
Kadriye Başak Külcü also mentioned the success of the students raised by Mevlüt Külcü, saying, "My husband was a good educator. He touched the lives of many children. He had many students who went on to achieve great things. He would have continued to touch the lives of many children who would achieve great things in the future. They took this duty away from him. It is not easy to raise a person. We all come to where we are by scraping and clawing. It is unacceptable for a person's life to be taken away so ruthlessly," she said.
Meanwhile, a memory book prepared at Mehmet Akif İnan Anatolian High School, where Mevlüt Külcü worked, was also delivered to his family.
