A gold pocket watch belonging to one of the wealthiest passengers on the Titanic, which sank after hitting an iceberg on April 14, 1912, leading to the deaths of more than 1,500 people, was sold for a record price at an auction held in the United Kingdom.
One of the most tragic maritime disasters in history, the Titanic disaster, has drawn attention this weekend as a rare memento from the event was sold at auction in the United Kingdom for the highest price ever recorded.
A gold watch belonging to Isidor Straus, who perished in the disaster along with his wife Ida, found a buyer at the auction for a record price.
THE HIGHEST AMOUNT PAID FOR A MEMORABILIA
At the auction conducted by Henry Aldridge and Son Auctioneers, the sale price of the watch reached £1.78 million (approximately 99 million TL).
The auction house manager, Andrew Aldridge, stated that this figure is the highest price ever paid for such a piece of memorabilia, saying, "This result shows that interest in the Titanic story has not diminished at all. Every passenger and crew member on board had a story to tell; even 113 years later, these memorabilia keep those stories alive."
ITEMS FROM THE TITANIC ARE INVALUABLE
With the sale of other items related to the Titanic at the same auction, the total sales value reached £3 million. The previous record belonged to a gold pocket watch gifted to the captain of the Carpathia, the ship that rescued over 700 survivors from the Titanic. This record of £1.56 million was surpassed just a year later.
