New footage has emerged, along with audio recordings from the 112 Emergency Call Center, as evidence in the case of İlhan İhtiyaroğlu, who is being prosecuted while in custody for punching retired primary school teacher Abdullah Coşkun, leading to his death, during a fight that occurred in Giresun. Additionally, it has been learned that Melike Gürcüoğlu, one of the complainant's lawyers at the hearing, is also one of Coşkun's former students.
The accident that shocked Turkey occurred in Giresun on November 16 last year at the Karakoç Junction on the Black Sea Coastal Road in the Fındıklı neighborhood of the Keşap district. A car with license plate 61 ADL 995, driven by İlhan İhtiyaroğlu (38), collided with another car with license plate 28 ADE 196, driven by retired primary school teacher Abdullah Coşkun (68). After the accident, which caused damage to the vehicles, a dispute broke out between the drivers. The argument escalated into a fistfight.
TEACHER WHO BEAT CANCER KILLED BY TRAFFIC THUG Coşkun, who was injured from the blows he received during the fight, collapsed to the ground. Upon the notification of bystanders, health and police teams were dispatched to the area. After the initial intervention by the health team, Abdullah Coşkun was taken to Giresun Education and Research Hospital by ambulance, but could not be saved. The driver İhtiyaroğlu, who was taken into custody, was arrested after the proceedings. Coşkun, who had overcome lung cancer, was buried in the Tirebolu district a week after the accident, having regained his health after a three-year treatment by his daughter, Associate Professor Dr. Ayşe Coşkun Beyan, a faculty member at Dokuz Eylul University Medical School of Chest Diseases.
Arrested İlhan İhtiyaroğlu "I QUIT KARATE WITHOUT ADVANCING IN RANKS," HE SAID A lawsuit was filed against İlhan İhtiyaroğlu, who is accused of punching Abdullah Coşkun and causing his death, for the crime of 'intentional murder' at the Giresun 3rd High Criminal Court. İhtiyaroğlu, who appeared before the judge for the first time, denied the allegations and stated that he had quit the karate course he attended briefly as a child without advancing in ranks, and that he worked as a security personnel in a hospital, exercising twice a week to stay active.
EVIDENCE IN THE FORM OF AUDIO RECORDINGS AND FOOTAGE EMERGED Three different audio recordings obtained from the 112 Emergency Call Center and the footage from the bus's internal camera, which passed by during the incident, were included as evidence in the case file. In the 112 call, part of the argument between the parties and the sounds of the struggle were heard, while the bus camera captured moments immediately after the accident. The Coşkun family's lawyers pointed out that the mobile phone used on the day of the incident was among the items kept by the authorities, and referred to the eyewitnesses in the vehicle during the accident, stating that the arrested defendant's wife, Gamze İhtiyaroğlu, said, "İlhan stop, İlhan don't, İlhan killed a man," which was reflected in the 112 audio recordings. In response to the allegations, Gamze İhtiyaroğlu stated that she did not remember the statements made.
Deceased teacher Abdullah Coşkun STUDENT HE GRADUATED DEFENDED HIM The court panel decided to continue the defendant's detention and postponed the hearing. During the hearing, it was noted by the complainant's lawyer Melike Gürcüoğlu that Abdullah Coşkun was one of the last students he graduated before retirement. It was reported that Gürcüoğlu graduated from Meçhul Asker Primary School in Ordu, where Abdullah Coşkun's last duty was, in 2012.
Gürcüoğlu stated that primary school teacher Coşkun was a very good person who raised many children beneficial to the country, and emphasized that the defendant did not express any remorse during the trial, did not offer condolences to the family, and did not show sensitivity to the pain, requesting the heaviest penalty for the defendant. Gürcüoğlu noted that some colleagues who made negative evaluations about the defendant were hesitant to give statements and suggested a comprehensive examination of the personnel file of İlhan İhtiyaroğlu at his last workplace.
STATEMENT FROM THE LAWYERS OF THE PARTIES The detained defendant's lawyer Hicran Akkaya Şenol stated in a written statement that her client showed a reflex of help, arguing, "The recordings in question show that during the incident, the camera and simultaneous audio recordings indicate that the other party got out of the vehicle before my client, then got out of the vehicle normally and called 112 Emergency, and contrary to the perception that was intended to be created at that moment, there was an attack on my client, and my client acted with a reflex to call 112 again for help after the other party suffered a heart attack. The existing Forensic Medicine report in the file clearly shows that the death occurred not as a result of assault as claimed, but due to an existing heart condition."
"WE EXPECT A PRECEDENT-SETTING DECISION" Complainant's lawyer Çağdaş Tarık Taner stated that they expect a precedent-setting decision, saying, "Not seeing the slightest sign of remorse from the defendant during the trial, along with mocking gestures, has further increased my clients' pain. The defendant's defenses aimed at escaping the crime do not reflect the truth. Autopsy images prove that Teacher Abdullah received at least 5 fatal blows to the head. These blows caused serious bleeding. Attacking someone 30 years older and defenseless by cutting off their vehicle's path has resulted in a loss of life. This incident has created deep pain in the hearts of all of Turkey. We believe that as a result of the trial, the defendant will receive the punishment he deserves, the public and the victim's family's conscience will be somewhat relieved, and a precedent-setting decision will emerge that will contribute to the reduction of such attacks in society."
