During the transfer of a prisoner extradited to Türkiye at Korydallos Prison in Greece, other Turkish prisoners rioted and started a fire. Three people lost their lives and 20 were injured during the riot.
A riot broke out in the morning hours during the transfer of a Turkish prisoner who was to be extradited to Turkey at Korydallos Prison, located west of Athens, the capital of Greece. Other inmates, seeking to prevent the transfer of the Turkish prisoner, set mattresses and various items on fire, causing a blaze in the prison. Numerous police units were dispatched to the prison, and police intervened with the rioters, bringing the situation under control.
RIOT ERUPTED DURING PRISONER TRANSFER
According to reports in the Greek press, the riot broke out around 10:00 local time in the 5th ward, where officials had come to take the prisoner for transfer to the airport. The reports noted that control at the prison was re-established around 14:00 local time.
Authorities deployed numerous police vehicles around the prison to prevent possible further incidents. Officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
3 DEAD, 20 INJURED
Police sources stated that the transfer of the prisoner in question to the airport was carried out as planned.
It is reported that the prisoners, who were said to be involved in the incident of shooting at some venues in Maltepe, Istanbul, were caught in 2024 through Operation Cage 39. It is claimed that some criminals who fled from Turkey to Greece during the judicial process were caught as a result of incidents they were involved in in the country, sent to Greek prisons, and were to be extradited to Turkey due to international warrants. It is believed that the prisoners involved in the riot caused the incident to request political asylum.
While no official statement has yet been made by Greek authorities, it has been alleged that 3 people died and 20 were injured during the riot.
