In Kayseri, a suspect who killed two cousins and their uncle with a gun in a fight caused by inheritance and land disputes and then fled abroad, was brought back to Turkey after 3.5 years on the run and brought before a judge.
HE KILLED 3 PEOPLE AND FLED ABROAD
The incident occurred on January 3, 2022, in Hunat Neighborhood, Melikgazi district of Kayseri. M.Y. (Mehmet Yılmaz) shot and killed his cousins Gaffar Mehmet Y. and Seyit Y., and their uncle Serdar Y., with a pistol during a fight due to a land dispute. M.A., who was passing by during the incident, was injured. After the incident, the suspect fled to Georgia illegally, and the Kayseri Provincial Police Department's Public Order Branch and Homicide Bureau launched a comprehensive operation for his capture.
CAUGHT IN GEORGIA, HANDED OVER IN HOPA
As a result of joint efforts with international authorities, the suspect M.Y., caught in Georgia, was handed over to Turkish security forces at the Hopa Border Gate. He was arrested by the court and sent to prison.
HE DID NOT TESTIFY IN THE FIRST HEARING
After being brought to Turkey, the defendant Mehmet Yılmaz attended the first hearing at the Kayseri 4th Heavy Penal Court via SEGBIS from the prison where he is held. He stated that he would not make a defense because his lawyer was not present, but wanted to appear in person to testify. The lawyers of the victims' relatives who attended the hearing demanded that the defendant be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for each victim separately. The court panel adjourned the hearing to October 15, 2026, to address missing details.
