In Kahramanmaraş, an autistic child named Davut Emirhan Altunbay was taken to the hospital due to complaints of itching in his nose, where an olive pit and a piece of a straw were found in his nasal cavity. The Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist Dr. Faruk Atlı, who performed the surgery, warned families, saying, "In young children, those who frequently scratch their noses, have allergies, or experience nasal discharge should not ignore this."
The Altunbay family, living in Kahramanmaraş, took their child Davut Emirhan to the Private Sular Academy Hospital after noticing that he frequently scratched his nose. During the examination by Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist Dr. Faruk Atlı, a foreign object was found in Davut Emirhan Altunbay's nose. During the surgery, an olive pit and a piece of plastic straw were removed from Altunbay's nose.
"WE ENCOUNTERED A STRAW DURING THE SURGERY"
Dr. Faruk Atlı, who performed the operation, stated that he only detected the olive pit during the initial examination but encountered the straw during the surgery. He also noted that if foreign objects that enter the nose are not intervened in a timely manner, they can lead to very serious health problems. Atlı said, "We have a special patient who is 11 years old. There is a curvature to the left in the nasal bone, and he has allergies. That’s why he experiences frequent itching. He came with complaints of nasal obstruction, itching, and pain. Due to his special condition, we could not remove it in outpatient conditions and took him to the operating room. In the operating room, I removed an olive pit from the right side of the nose. While checking the back to see if there was anything else, I also found a plastic piece. We removed that plastic piece as well. The possibility of foreign objects should always be considered in patients who scratch their noses a lot. If there is nasal obstruction, especially if we sense a smell, we should consult a doctor immediately. Families should not ignore this in small children who scratch their noses a lot, have allergies, or have a runny nose. They need to consult a doctor when such a thing occurs," he said.
THE FAMILY WAS SURPRISED
Davut Emirhan Altunbay's mother, Hacer Altunbay, expressed their surprise upon seeing what came out of her son's nose, stating, "We brought him to the doctor when he had itching and bleeding in his nose. We were also surprised that they came out. An olive pit and a piece of straw came out. Thank God his condition is good now. Children with such nose itching must definitely see a doctor; anything can happen," she said.
