While the accident moments were captured on security cameras, local tradesmen emphasized that the tram should reduce its speed. Tradesman Ali Koç said, "Bicycles or pedestrians come out of the streets quickly. Since the tram comes fast, there is always a danger. Especially on Hüdavendigar Street, it needs to go slow."
In Fatih, Istanbul, a tram hit a woman walking on the street. The moment of the accident was captured on security cameras, while local tradespeople claimed that trams do not obey the speed limit and called on authorities to prevent similar accidents.
TRAM FLUNG HER ONTO THE PAVEMENT
The incident occurred around 20:30 on July 28 on Hüdavendigar Street in Sirkeci. According to reports, a tram in motion hit a female tourist who was walking on the road. The woman was thrown onto the pavement by the impact and fell to the ground, sustaining a head injury. It was learned that the injured woman did not go to the hospital, while the moment the tram hit her was recorded by the security camera of a nearby business. Following the accident, local tradespeople stated that trams travel at high speeds, especially on Hüdavendigar Street, and demanded that measures be taken.
"THERE IS ALWAYS DANGER BECAUSE THE TRAM COMES FAST"
Ali Koç, a tradesman in Sirkeci, claimed that trams travel faster than necessary on Hüdavendigar Street, saying, "They go very fast from Sirkeci's Orhaniye connection to Gülhane station. This is a tourist area, and since our sidewalks are not very wide, people spill over from the sidewalk, and the arrival of this fast tram poses a danger. Bicycles or pedestrians come out of the streets quickly. There is always danger because the tram comes fast. On Hüdavendigar Street, it especially needs to go slowly. Unfortunately, when tram drivers come here, they go very fast. Because as soon as they turn that corner, the road is straight from here to Gülhane; that's why they go so fast. There are also 3-4 streets here. People can dash onto the street running from the alleys. A tradesman might suddenly throw himself onto the street to get somewhere urgently. This is a great danger. After all, it's a life."
"IRON BARRIERS WON'T WORK HERE, OUR SIDEWALKS ARE SMALL"
Stating that iron railings would not be a solution, Koç said, "If you say iron, iron won't work here. Our sidewalks are small, and it becomes even more dangerous. They did something like that in front of the bank down there. An accident happened there too. A pedestrian lost their life. What needs to happen here is that the tram should reduce its speed and proceed in a controlled manner when entering Hüdavendigar Street. When it doesn't go in a controlled manner, people get distracted; they suddenly dash onto the street. They can go by bicycle, so it poses a great danger. It's quite normal for accidents to happen. As long as they go at this speed, these accidents cannot be prevented."
